ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Published by the International Organization for Standardization, it provides a framework for organisations to systematically manage their environmental responsibilities, reduce their environmental impact, and demonstrate continuous improvement.

The standard follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle:

  • Plan: Identify environmental aspects, set objectives, and establish processes to deliver results in accordance with the organisation’s environmental policy
  • Do: Implement the planned processes, including training, communication, and operational controls
  • Check: Monitor and measure processes against the environmental policy, objectives, and legal requirements; report results
  • Act: Take corrective actions and pursue continual improvement

Key requirements of ISO 14001 include:

  1. Environmental policy , top management commitment to environmental protection
  2. Aspects and impacts register , identification of significant environmental interactions
  3. Legal compliance , systematic tracking of applicable environmental regulations
  4. Objectives and targets , measurable goals with action plans
  5. Internal audits , regular assessment of the EMS effectiveness
  6. Management review , periodic evaluation by senior leadership

ISO 14001 certification is granted by accredited third-party auditors and is valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits. Over 400,000 organisations worldwide hold ISO 14001 certification.

While ISO 14001 predates the CSRD, having a certified EMS significantly supports regulatory compliance and ESG performance. Companies with ISO 14001 are better positioned to meet the environmental data requirements of ESRS reporting and to improve their EcoVadis scores.

Dcycle helps ISO 14001-certified organisations connect their EMS data to sustainability reporting workflows.
